Social networking websites are famous and addictive. People give up all kinds or personal information that they would never think of sharing in person. Hackers, spammers and all sorts of ill-intentioned people frequent these sites to gather confidential information. And so do we, frequently as part of testing to gather information for password cracking and social engineering. It’s an absolute goldmine. We can tell more about the structure of a company in 8 minutes on Facebook and Twitter than we can from 8 hours digging through websites and public filings.
It is all too easy to let confidential information slip, or to leave breadcrumbs for the bad guys to leverage. Think carefully about what you let your employees do on social media – it’s a question of WHEN, not IF leaks will happen.
